The painting Christ in the Garden Supported by an Angel, is from the church of S. Maria Maggiore in Venice. A variant of uncertain authorship is in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice.
The painting of Veronese is highly refined in execution. Its new and rare inventive aspects are musically rendered by the fresh and dewy quality of the paint. While the archeological features of the background powerfully prefigure the leaden atmosphere of Guardi's ruins, the mystic light , which Veronese is pouring down in the foreground seems to anticipate the phosphorescent distortions of El Greco.
