
The Most notable Hungarian artist is Mihaly Munkacsy, 1844?1909,a Hungarian genre and historical painter, whose original name was Michael Lieb. In 1868 he went to Dusseldorf, where he painted "The Last Day of a Condemned Man", which won him wide recognition. In 1872 he settled in Paris. From 1881 he painted chiefly religious and historical paintings in a highly dramatic style. His "Christ before Pilate" has been widely reproduced. Munkacsy's work is represented in the museums of Vienna, Philadelphia, and Chicago and in the Metropolitan Museum. |
